Scrabster lies at the extreme north of the Scottish mainland close to the town of Thurso. It is an important fish landing port with good berthing facilities for fishing boats and a fish market. Evidence of a human presence goes back 10000 years with colonisation of the area by Picts and Vikings. This was followed by times of great turmoil as the Scottish highland clans fought each other for land and supremacy. In recent years Scrabster has attracted a variety of cruise ships as tourists look to more remote locations for cruising. The port competes with Aberdeen as an oil and gas base offering the advantage of being closer to the production platforms. It has sucessfully attracted a lot of new business in the marine renewables trade. The port continues to develop with modernisation of the fish market and the building of new deepwater quays , all serving to make Scrabster an important hub of activity for the whole highland region. Ferries operated by Northlink connect Scrabster to Stromness in the Orkneys. For ferry bookings please contact our Customer Services Team on +44 (0) 844 847 9000
