Sheerness first came to prominence as a 16th century fort that was constructed to protect the River medway from invasion. The Royal Navy saw an opportunity to build a safe dockyard for the provisioning and repairing of ships and after construction it remained as a base performing these functions until the naval dockyard closed in 1960. It also acted as the command centre for the North Sea activity of the RN. The Victorian era saw the construction of a then fashionable pier and also a promenade and it remains a seaside resort until this day. The town was also the site of one of the UK's first cooperative. Industry is still at the heart of Sheerness although the town suffered a major blow when the dockyard, which was the major employer, finally closed with the loss of thousands of jobs. However , the Medway Port Authority took over the site for commercial use and began a policy of expansion . The availablity of cheap land attracted new industries including pharmaceuticals and steel and the fortunes of the town started to turn for the better. The port became one of the UK's largest car importers due to the large land bank available for storage, and it also handles fresh fruit and produce from around the world. Road and rail connections are good with close connections to the M2,M20 and M25, and a branch line off the main rail line into the port. The port has natural deep water with no tidal restrictions or locks and has 9 berths, 6 of which have ro-ro facilities. It also has freeport status making it very attractive to distribution companies. For ferry bookings please contact our Customer Services Team on +44 (0) 844 847 9000
