The port of Aberdeen, according to the Guinness book of records, is the oldest port in Britain. Freight volumes through the port of Aberdeen grew dramatically during the 1980's and 1990's, with the additions of grain terminals, transit sheds. Further developments saw the introduction of roll on roll off berths to accommodation ferry services, and deep sea berths to accommodate larger lift on lift off vessels, up to 165 m in length and 26 m beam. The port of Aberdeen has secured substantial contracts such as B.P. Exploration who transferred its offshore marine support operations to Aberdeen in 2002. Today the port handles 4 million tonnes of cargo annually. Roll-on roll-off ferry services from Aberdeen go to Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands. These daily ferry services go to Kirkwall port, Lerwick port, Scrabster port and Stromness port.
