Stranraer became established as a market town around 1600 with nearby Portpatrick acting as the port for transportation to Ireland. The harbour was constructed and developed in the late 1700's early 1800's and was eventually connected to Dumfries by railway in 1861. Portpatrick was also linked to Stranraer by rail, but due to it's exposed position it proved impossible to maintain a port here. So Stranraer grew into the main Scottish port for ferries to Ireland. Stranraer is Dumfries and Galloways second largest town with a population in excess of 13000 . Although not heavily industrialised, the twon has a large creamery producing cheese and the other main industries are tourism, linked to the ferry port, and farming. Ferry services are operated by Stena Line using a conventional ro-ro ferry and an HSS fast craft. Stena are currently looking at moving their operation further down Loch Ryan to a new terminal at Old House Point after a plan to share facilities with neighbours P&O at Cairnryan fell through.
